Asynchronous leanring is learning that is on your own schedule. Students are provided with materials, assignments, and lectures with instructions on how and when to complete the tasks. There may be a time frame but there is a lot of freedom as when the course is completed.
Conversely, synchronous learning is an online course where students and instructors are required to b online at the same time. Lectures and presentation occur at a specific time and all are required to connect.
Elements of a synchronous class include:
-Chatting
-Telephone
-Video conferencing
-Wed conferencing
-Podcasts
-Virtual worlds
Elements of an asynchronous class include:
-Virtual libraries
-E-mail-Discussion boards
-Social networking
-Collaborative documents
-E-portfolios
-DVD/CD-Rom
There are positives and negatives to both types of classes. The important thing to remember when deciding which type of class to take, is what kid of learner are you.
