Navigate 1.3.1 Discussing the LMS and CMS Quest

A Learning management system is software that handles all parts of the learning process. A LMS is used to manage instructional content, deliver content, track progress, and report progress. Usually web based, a LMS can be a way for instructors to communicate with their students.



Learning Management System
1. organize course content
2. has different accounts for different participants (student, teacher, parent, administrator)
3. communication forum to post announcements and discussions
4. assessment system
5. grade book
6. email option
7. option for project work/ support groups
8. way to individualize learning
9. ways to report student usage of the LMS




Conversely, a Course Management System (CMS) is an older term that is used to refer to a basic management of course content. The new term, Learning Management System focusses on the learning process and all that is encompasses.
