Over the next five years, the trend that will have the biggest impact on digital learning is Game-Based Learning. Gamification is the application of game type elements to non-games based activities such as learning. In order for Game-Based Learning to be successful, instructors must include elements of rewards or even competition in order to motivate students to succeed. Students engage in learning technology and Game-Based learning is one way to reward and encourage this engagement. Gamification is important because of the benefits to the learning process and more importantly retention of information. With the involvement of foundations like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Next Generation Learning Challenges, it is expected that Game-Based Learning will become increasingly more prevalent in education.
Game-Based Learning is not new but it is being used more frequently and in better ways than in the past. I expect that in the next five years, it will even more greatly impact education.
